FSI

ILH Groundcare is Scotland’s FSI stump grinder dealer, covering the full range from lightweight pedestrian models through to heavy-duty tracked machines with remote control.

Whether you need a 130kg walk-behind for garden gate access or a 74hp diesel unit that clears large stumps in minutes, we stock it, service it, and carry the parts to keep it running.

We’ve been using FSI grinders ourselves for over a decade, so the advice you get comes from real site experience. Sale, hire, servicing, and spare parts all from one place.

  • The Company Behind FSI

FSI is a Danish manufacturer based in Ølholm, near Tørring, founded in 2002.

Unlike many groundcare brands that build several product lines, FSI makes only stump grinders, which has made it Europe’s largest manufacturer in the category.

Production facilities run through central manufacturing sites in Denmark, backed by a network of skilled local sub-suppliers.

That single-product focus shows up in the detail.

Hill-hold brakes, factory-greased bearings, and a shared tooth system across most of the range are built into the design from the start.

ILH’s relationship with the brand started many years ago, out on real jobs.

    Why a Single-Focus Manufacturer Matters

FSI puts its entire engineering effort into one product category: stump grinders.

Two decades of production have gone into exactly one machine type, and the difference shows up when something needs fixing.

A shared tooth system across most of the pedestrian range means a fault found on one model often gets designed out across the next production run for all of them, not just the one machine that had the problem.

Parts commonality is deliberate rather than accidental.

It also means FSI’s own engineers have spent two decades solving exactly one set of problems: cutting through wood, moving safely on soft ground, and keeping the machine running through a full season. That focus is harder to buy from a manufacturer building six different product lines at once.

ILH Groundcare’s Trusted Relationship with FSI

Years of grinding stumps with FSI machines before ILH became a dealer gave us a feel for the difference between a machine that’s easy to service and one that fights you every time a belt needs tensioning.

That experience is why we’re a genuine FSI partner rather than one more name on a distributor list.

We stock the wide range of FSI stump cutters, from compact pedestrian units to heavy tracked machines, and back every one with parts and servicing from our own workshop.

    The FSI Range

FSI builds two broad configurations across a wide selection of models: pedestrian and tracked. Whether tracks or wheels suit you better depends on access, frequency of use, and the size of stump you’re dealing with.

The full range of stump grinders splits below.

    Pedestrian (Walk-Behind) Grinders

Pedestrian models are wheeled machines the operator positions by hand or drives with hydraulic assist, built for gates, side passages, and gardens a bigger machine can’t reach.

Engine power across the pedestrian line runs from a 14hp entry model up to a 38hp unit with a 2WD or 4WD drive option.

    Tracked and Self-Propelled Grinders

Tracked grinders drive themselves to the stump on rubber tracks, carry a wider cutting disc, and grind faster and deeper than a pedestrian unit.

Engine options step up from a 25hp diesel entry point to a 74hp unit at the top of the range, built to efficiently remove stumps that would take a pedestrian machine several times as long.

Every tracked model drives itself on and off a plant trailer under its own power, no winch needed, for safe and easy transport between sites.

    Who Buys FSI Stump Grinders

Tree surgeons are the biggest group we sell and hire to.

Stump removal is usually an add-on to felling work, done on the same visit, and a pedestrian model rides on the same trailer as the chipper for exactly that reason.

Landscapers buy to clear old stumps before turfing or planting, often on renovation jobs with several stumps to remove before a new layout goes in.

Councils, hire fleets, and dedicated stump removal contractors run more of the tracked end of the range, where speed and depth per pass across multiple sites justify the higher cost.

We have developed a reputation for matching the machine to the job rather than pushing the biggest one on the lot.

A tree surgeon doing three domestic gardens a week doesn’t need the same kit as a council contract clearing a housing estate, and we’ll say so upfront.

That advice is backed by workshop support on everything we sell or hire out, so the machine keeps earning once it’s on your trailer.

Engineering FSI Builds Into Every Grinder

A few design choices show up across most of the FSI line, regardless of model.

The hill-hold system on pedestrian models locks the machine’s wheels against rolling forward while you’re moving the machine up a ramp, step, or across uneven ground, this allows it to be safely under control while you’re positioning and moving the machine.

Bearing housings across most of the range are factory-greased for 1,000 hours of operation, so no daily greasing routine is needed.

    Hydraulic Drive and Remote Control

FSI hydraulic drive systems on the self-propelled range give smooth, controllable power delivery built for professional daily use. Several tracked models add radio remote control on top of that, so the operator works from a safe distance on rough terrain.

Belt tensioning across the pedestrian line uses a straightforward V-belt setup, easy to source and easy to fit.

The hydraulic drive and belt tensioning both use standard parts.

Although we also stock genuine parts, this allows workshops to services them with everyday tools, and a machine stays working without a wait for specialist equipment.

Rubber tracks on the self-propelled models spread weight over a wider area than wheels. Traction holds on wet grass, soft ground, and uneven terrain where a wheeled unit would spin or sink, which matters most on parkland and embankments.

    New or Used FSI Grinders

A new FSI grinder comes with current specifications and no history of hard use by a previous owner. That matters most for hire fleets and businesses where downtime costs more than the price difference.

For lower upfront costs, we carry used stock when it’s available.

Every used FSI grinder goes through our workshop, so it is ready to work the day it leaves. We check the cutting wheel, teeth, bearings, and hydraulics, and we’re upfront about hours and condition so you’re not left guessing.

    Service, Parts, and Sale

Every FSI model we sell is available new, and we carry used machines when it’s on hand.

We also service and repair FSI grinders bought elsewhere, plus other brands including Predator, Carlton, Vermeer, and Bandits.

Carbide cutting teeth wear on every model, faster on hardwood and stony ground. FSI’s shared tooth system across most of the pedestrian range means you carry just one type of spare in the van.

We stock genuine teeth, belts, and bearings at our Cumbernauld workshop for same-day collection or next-day UK delivery.

  • FSI Stump Grinders: Your Questions Answered

What is the best brand of stump grinder?

What you’re grinding and how often matters more than which badge is on the machine. We chose to build our own business around FSI because the single-product focus shows in the build quality and the parts availability.

What's the difference between the FSI B21 stump grinder and the rest of the pedestrian range?

The FSI B21 stump grinder is the lightest and most affordable model, suited to occasional domestic stumps. Heavier pedestrian models add power, drive assistance, and cutting depth for operators grinding more often.

How much does it cost to grind a stump?

Pricing depends on the machine, the stump, and whether you’re hiring or buying. Call 0141 775 9288 for current pricing on any model in the range.

Do you hire FSI stump grinders?

Yes, both pedestrian and tracked models. Every machine goes through our workshop between hires before it goes back out. Daily, weekly, and longer rates are available. Call to check availability for your dates and we’ll match the model to the stump.
