Do I need training to use a stump grinder?
No formal qualification is required to operate a stump grinder in the UK, but you do need to be competent and confident with the machine. We provide a full walkthrough on delivery covering the controls, safety features, and correct grinding technique, including what PPE to wear (eye protection, ear defenders, gloves, and steel-toe boots). For commercial jobs, employers should ensure operators have appropriate training under HSE health and safety regulations.
How deep does a stump grinder cut?
Our pedestrian models cut to around 9 inches below ground level, which is enough for most domestic situations where you want to lay turf, build a patio, or replant. Tracked models cut to 18 inches or deeper, which is necessary for larger stumps with extensive root plates, or where the ground needs to be cleared for construction or landscaping work.
Can I remove a stump myself with a hired grinder?
Yes, if you’re comfortable operating machinery. Stump grinders are straightforward to use once you’ve had the walkthrough, and most people get the hang of the technique within the first few minutes. We’ll make sure you know what you’re doing before we leave. If you’d rather not operate the machine yourself, we can recommend local contractors who offer a grinding service.
How long does it take to grind a stump?
A small garden stump (under 12 inches diameter) usually takes 15 to 30 minutes with a pedestrian grinder. Larger stumps on a tracked machine can take 30 minutes to an hour depending on the timber type, diameter, and how deep you need to go. Hardwoods like oak and beech take longer than softwoods.
What happens to the grindings?
Stump grinding produces a mix of wood chips and soil. Most operators rake the grindings back into the hole to fill the void, which settles over time. The grindings can also be used as mulch around garden beds. We don’t remove the grindings as part of the hire, but they’re easy to manage.
What if the grinder breaks down during my hire?
Call us straight away. As the FSI dealer with parts in stock, we can often diagnose the issue over the phone. If it needs hands-on attention, we’ll arrange a swap or repair visit as quickly as possible. You won’t be left on site with a dead machine and no support.

When to Hire a Pedestrian Stump Grinder
A pedestrian grinder is the right choice when you’re removing smaller stumps in tight spaces. Back gardens with narrow gate access, landscaping projects where you’re working around existing planting, and domestic jobs where a single stump needs grinding down for a patio, lawn, or new planting. They’re lighter, easier to transport, and cause less ground disturbance than tracked machines.
If you’re dealing with stumps under about 18 inches in diameter and the ground is reasonably firm and level, a pedestrian model will do the job efficiently.
When to Hire a Tracked Stump Grinder
A tracked grinder makes sense for larger stumps, harder timber, deeper grinding, or higher volumes. If you’re working through multiple stumps on a site clearance, grinding large hardwood stumps (oak, beech, sycamore), or need to grind well below ground level, a tracked machine has the power and cutting depth to handle it.
Tracked machines also cope better on slopes, soft ground, and uneven terrain. The tracks spread the machine’s weight and give it grip where a pedestrian unit might struggle.

Because we’re the FSI dealer, we carry spare cutting teeth, belts, and wear parts in stock. If teeth need replacing mid-hire, we can get them to you the same day in most cases. A generalist hire company would be sourcing parts from a third party and hoping they fit.

Pedestrian Stump Grinders
Pedestrian grinders are walk-behind machines that the operator guides into position by hand. They’re compact, manoeuvrable, and fit through standard garden gates, side passages, and tight spaces that larger tracked machines can’t reach.
FSI’s pedestrian range covers five models suited to different workloads, from occasional domestic stump removal through to daily grinding for busy tree surgery crews. The lightest models are under 26 inches wide and weigh under 150kg, making them ideal for residential garden work, garden renovations, and smaller landscaping jobs where you need to get in and out quickly without damaging surrounding ground or planting. The larger pedestrian models step up in cutting capacity for operators working through several stumps in a day rather than tackling one-offs.
Tracked Stump Grinders
Tracked grinders are self-propelled machines on rubber tracks. They’re heavier and more powerful than pedestrian models, with deeper cutting capability and wider cutting arcs. The tracks give them stability on slopes and soft ground, and they drive themselves to the stump rather than needing to be pushed or carried.
FSI’s self-propelled range includes several tracked and wheeled configurations, with options for radio remote control so the operator can stand back from the cutting wheel during grinding. These are the machines professional tree surgery crews, grounds maintenance teams, and stump removal contractors hire for medium to large stumps on sites with reasonable access. The larger tracked models add diesel engines for operators who need better fuel economy on longer contracts.
