Snow Clearing Machine for a Yard, Car Park or Estate

A site needs to be cleared from snow and safe to drive during the colder months. ILH Groundcare match your snowfall to the correct machine.

We supply and hire machines built for that scale.

A MultiOne compact loader carries a snow blade, snow plow, snow blower or salt and sand spreader on the same quick-hitch and goes back onto groundworks or yard clearances once the snow has cleared. A Sherpa mini loader with a snow scraper covers the paths a bigger machine can’t reach.

  • A MultiOne compact loader as a snow clearing machine

The snow removal equipment for a highway or a runway is municipal kit, and a tractor with a blade is the farm answer.

A compact loader sits between the two, sized for a yard or a car park, and it’s the snow clearing machine we’d recommend for a medium-sized commercial site.

A MultiOne runs its winter attachments on the same quick-hitch as the bucket. The blade goes on in a minute and comes off once the roadway is clear.

Underneath, four-wheel hydrostatic drive finds traction on packed snow for safe steering and grip.

Four MultiOne winter attachments, from snow blade to snow blower HD

MultiOne makes four attachments for winter work on the loader.

The blade and the spreader cover most sites, and the plow and the blower come in as the roads get longer and the snow gets deeper for areas with greater snowfall.

    Snow blade

The snow blade is the one yards typically fit first. It handles light to moderate snow from pavements and driveways with ease.

It angles 30° left or right from the seat to push snow to the roadside, and an adjustable plastic cutting edge which can also be used to move light materials such as grains and sawdust once winter has ended.

Once the ground is clear, the quick-hitch swaps the blade for a bucket to pile the snow up.

    Snow plow

The snow plow is the blade’s heavier relation, built wider and stronger for access roads, long car park aisles and packed snow that has been driven over.

The attachment has two independent and hydraulically adjustable blades, which gives the driver 5 configurations from the seat. These include straight, V, Y, or angled 30° left or right.

It comes in different widths and heights across the range, fitting the 2 Series upward.

The extra width means fewer passes on a large car park, and the weight behind it keeps the edge down on snow a lighter blade would ride over.

    Snow blower HD

Where a drift is too deep for either blade, the Snow blower HD is an efficient way to remove large amounts of snow through it and throws it clear through a rotating chute.

The attachment’s chute can be rotated 200°, alongside the discharge height for controlled placement.

The HD stands for heavy duty, and is well matched to estate and property maintenance.

It’s slower than a blade on light snow, so we’d keep the blade on for everyday clearing.

The blower comes out once the depth beats the blade, or when the only alternative is loading the snow into a trailer to be hauled away.

    Salt and sand spreader

The blade deals with the snow, but for safer roads and pavements, the ice needs to be gritted.

The salt and sand spreader puts rock salt, grit or sand down across the cleared surface to de-ice it.

Cleared tarmac refreezes overnight into an icy skin that is more slippery than the snow was.

We’d run the spreader on the same loop as the blade, with one operator clearing and gritting in a single pass, rather than send someone round later with a pushed spreader.

The towed version of the attachment allows snow to be cleared and ice to be handled simultaneously.

After the winter months, the salt and sand spreader can be used to spread seed and fertiliser on agricultural sites.

Sherpa snow scrapers for confined areas

A MultiOne machine is multi-purpose, but it struggles with access on narrower sites.

This is where Sherpa’s range comes in.

At 76cm wide, the stand-on mini loader clears the paths, courtyards and walkways between buildings that a bigger machine fails to access.

    Mechanical snow scraper

Sherpa’s mechanical snow scraper attachment increases the width to 1100mm wide. For tight access areas, you can drive the machine through and then attach the blade.

It has 30° mechanical angle adjustment in each direction, and is compatible across all 5 of the Sherpa 100 models we sell and hire at ILH Groundcare. This includes the with the Sherpa 100 Diesel, 100 2Speed, 100 Small, 100 Petrol and the 100 Eco.

As a multi-use attachment, it can also be used as a feed scraper on agricultural sites.

For a school, a care home or a business park with a lot of path and not much yard, we’d often pick a Sherpa with a scraper over a MultiOne due to its lighter weight and small footprint.

Other winter attachments for the same loader

Compact loaders are designed to be multi-purpose, the same machine that clears the snow can handle multiple other jobs once it has thawed.

Slush and grit left on a hard standing are a hazard of their own and an eyesore for your customers.

A collector sweeper on the loader lifts the lot and carries it away in its hopper.

The bucket and the pallet forks are already on the shelf, and in winter the forks unload the pallets of rock salt.

Storm damage arrives with the same weather, since the fronts that drop snow also bring limbs down across estate tracks.

Swap the attachment for a log grab, and it clears fallen branches off the road.

Or for job sites, both brands come with dedicated pallet moving attachments.

    Which size of compact loader

Access decides between the two brands before size does.

A Sherpa at 76cm gets down the side passages and between the buildings, and a MultiOne carries the wider blade, the plow and the spreader across the open ground.

Within the MultiOne range, pick the size on the area you clear rather than the depth of snow.

The smaller series that fit through a gate suit a courtyard, and the larger series carry a wider blade and a heavier salt hopper across a distribution centre car park.

The MultiOne range is wheeled, and a wheel with proper tread and the loader’s weight over it finds traction on packed snow that a track spreads too thin.

Industrial or winter tyres beat turf tyres for the same reason, and chains help on a yard with a slope.

Electric models and sites that need both

The fully electric EZ Series runs the same blade and spreader on battery power, which suits a site that also uses the loader indoors, and the Sherpa 100 Eco does the same on the paths.

We run both ranges from the Cumbernauld workshop, so we can put a Sherpa and a MultiOne side by side and show you which one gets through your gate with the blade on.

A site with a yard and a network of paths often ends up with one of each, and either can be hired for the winter rather than bought.

Snow removal cost and whether buying is worth it

A dedicated snow clearing machine can be difficult to justify for most of Scotland, because it only works when it snows and sits in a shed for the rest of the year.

The sum is different for a compact loader bought for the bucket, the forks and the sweeper.

The snow blade and spreader cost a fraction of the loader, and one machine that clears snow in January and clears hay bales and grades the yard in July is a more cost effective buy than two.

For a site that only needs snow removal equipment in a bad winter, compact loader hire with the blade fitted beats owning a machine, and hire runs from a single day to the whole winter.

FAQs on snow clearing in Scotland

What is the difference between a snow plough and a snow blower?

A snow plough or snow blade pushes snow sideways and leaves it in a windrow at the edge, while a snow blower picks it up and throws it several metres clear through a chute. The blade is faster on light and moderate snow, and the blower is the tool for deep or heavy snow, or a site with nowhere to pile it.

How much does a snow removal machine cost?

A domestic snow blower costs a few hundred pounds and does one job, while a blade or spreader for a MultiOne costs a fraction of the loader it fits. The loader is priced on the series and the attachments you run, so call us for a figure.

Can I hire a compact loader with a snow blade fitted?

Yes, we fit the blade, scraper or spreader before a MultiOne or a Sherpa leaves the Cumbernauld workshop, check the machine over, and deliver it anywhere in Scotland for a day, a week or the whole winter.

How do I look after a snow clearing machine over winter?

Rinse the salt off after each use, grease the blade pivot, and store the spreader empty and dry so the rock salt doesn’t set in the hopper. Cutting edges and skid shoes wear, so check them before the season rather than after the first pass scores the tarmac.

Will a snow blade damage block paving?

A steel edge will lift a loose block, so run a rubber cutting edge or adjustable skid shoes on paving and keep the blade a few millimetres off the surface. On tarmac and concrete the steel edge is fine and clears packed snow better.
