Coppicing a woodland block, clearing a fallen tree after a storm, removing a line of aging parkland trees, or cutting back scrub on neglected ground all generate material that needs processing.

Chipping on site turns waste arisings into reusable wood chip rather than hauling off the estate, and it lets the crew keep working without waiting for skips or transport to clear the site.

Towable wood chippers

Tracked wood chippers

Tracked chippers handle terrain that rules out a towable unit.

Where the work is on soft woodland ground, along tracks without a hard surface, or through narrow gates between mature trees, a tracked machine gets to the timber without rutting the ground or needing a road to operate from.

PTO chippers for tractor-equipped estates

Estates already running a tractor often find a PTO chipper a practical fit.

The Forst PT6 and PT8 mount to the tractor’s power take-off, use the tractor’s engine rather than a separate unit, and give you a capable chipper without an extra machine to maintain.

Arbmax drum chippers for higher-volume work

Where timber diameters are larger or volumes are higher, Arbmax drum chippers produce a better chip quality and process more material faster than a typical arb chipper.

The Arbmax D35 handles 13-inch stems.

The D45 and D45X take up to 18-inch material while staying under the 3.5-tonne towing limit.

Stump Grinders for Estate Grounds

Tree surgery leaves stumps.

On an estate, they appear in woodland rides, along driveways, in formal garden areas, and in parkland used for grazing or events.

A stump in a woodland walk is a trip hazard and an obstacle to replanting, while one sitting across a driveway or access route creates clearance problems that affect the whole area until it’s dealt with.

FSI stump grinders cover the range from compact pedestrian machines through to large tracked self-propelled units.

Pedestrian models in the FSI B series are compact enough to access through gates and garden openings, work close to walls and hard landscaping without causing damage, and grind most residential and amenity stumps without difficulty.

For larger stumps, harder timber, or estates with a significant number of stumps to clear, tracked self-propelled machines in the range grind deeper, work faster, and handle hardwood stumps that slower pedestrian machines labour through.

Track Remote gives the operator radio-controlled operation, which is useful on slopes or in areas where standing close to the machine isn’t practical.

Stump grinding is project work on most estates rather than a regular part of the maintenance schedule.

Robotic Flail Mowers for Slopes, Banks, and Rough Terrain

Steep banks, ha-ha walls, embankments along drives, and sloped areas in historically landscaped parkland create a recurring maintenance problem for estate teams.

A ride-on or tractor mower can’t safely operate on the angles involved.

Strimming by hand takes a crew a long time, and on large banks that need cutting several times through the season, the hours required simply don’t add up. A robotic flail mower handles terrain a person and a conventional machine can’t.

Energreen robotic mowers are remote-controlled: the operator stays on level ground and drives the machine from a safe distance while it works on gradients up to 55 degrees.

Compact Loaders for Estate Groundwork and Material Handling

On an estate that runs a compact loader, the machine rarely sits idle.

Timber, wood chip, and landscaping aggregate all need moving between jobs, fencing lines need auger holes drilled, and estate tracks need grading after a hard winter.

One compact loader with the right attachments replaces several single-purpose machines and switches between all of those tasks easily.

Sherpa loaders are narrower and lighter than articulated machines, built for tight-access work where even a compact MultiOne is too wide.

They fit through standard doorways and along greenhouse rows, and they manoeuvre between mature trees on paths where a larger machine would cause damage.

The Sherpa 100 range covers petrol, diesel, and electric variants, so zero-emission work near sensitive buildings or heritage areas is available where it matters.

Hire, Buy, or Both

Estate machinery use isn’t uniform across the year, and ownership doesn’t always make sense for every machine.

A compact loader used several times a week through most of the year makes sense to own outright.

A large drum chipper brought in for a two-week winter woodland clearance, or a tracked stump grinder hired for a one-off project, makes more sense to hire than to buy and maintain year-round.

We hire and sell the same equipment, and the advice we give on which makes more sense is based on how (and how often) the estate uses the machinery and how often it would earn its keep.

The hire fleet is maintained in our workshop between hires, so a machine on hire leaves in the same condition as one going out for sale.

Which wood chipper is best for estate arb and woodland work?

The right chipper comes down to two things: how you access the site and what timber diameters you regularly handle. Forst towable chippers suit most arb work and travel easily between parts of the estate. Tracked Forst models handle soft ground and limited access. PTO chippers suit estates with an active tractor. Do robotic flail mowers work on steep ha-ha banks and historic parkland slopes?

Yes. Energreen robotic mowers operate on slopes up to 55 degrees and are controlled by radio remote, so the operator works from level ground while the machine handles the gradient. They suit the kind of steep, historically landscaped terrain that’s common on older Scottish estates where conventional mowing isn’t safe or practical.

Can a compact loader get through gates and into walled gardens?

MultiOne articulated loaders are compact but still need a reasonable access width to operate safely. Sherpa mini loaders are narrower and lighter, built specifically for tighter spaces including standard doorways, walled garden entrances, and areas where an articulated machine won’t fit. ILH carries both and can match you to the right one based on your access widths.

Do you service estate machinery from other brands?
