What separates an electric loader from a diesel one
A diesel engine needs a fuel tank, an exhaust, and the fuel-system servicing that comes with any combustion engine. An electric motor draws straight from a battery pack, with no fuel system to speak of.
Both power sources drive the same hydraulic system, spinning the pumps that move the boom, tilt the bucket, and run the attachments. Diesel propulsion and electric propulsion just get power to that hydraulic system by different routes.
The trade-offs that matter for compact loader types
Running costs and maintenance favour electric
An electric loader has no oil changes, no fuel filters, no diesel particulate filter to regenerate, and no fuel system to service at all.
Fewer service points mean less maintenance and lower operating costs over the machine’s life.
An electric loader produces no fume and no exhaust emission, and nothing burns while the machine idles between lifts.
For councils and contractors working toward sustainability goals, choosing an all-electric loader with zero emissions is a straightforward way to meet that target.
Total cost of ownership tends to favour electric once you factor in reduced servicing and lower running costs, though the picture depends on how many hours the machine actually works and what you pay for electricity versus diesel locally.
Diesel still wins on runtime and refuelling speed
A diesel tank refills in minutes at any pump, anywhere.
An electric loader needs a charger, and even with an optional fast charger fitted, a full charge takes considerably longer than filling a fuel tank.
Battery life across a working day depends heavily on how hard the machine is worked.
An operator running continuous heavy lifting through an 8-hour shift needs charging facilities on site or a genuine break to recharge or top-up.
For a contractor moving between sites with no guaranteed power supply, a diesel machine simply keeps working without that planning overhead.
Noise and emissions where it matters most
An electric loader runs at a fraction of the noise a diesel engine produces. It also has far less vibration through the seat and controls since there’s no combustion cycle shaking the chassis.
Indoor facilities, hospitality venues, and residential estates are exactly where our EZ5 gets specified most often.
Urban areas bring their own pressure too, particularly with ULEZ-style restrictions tightening across UK city centres.
A zero-emission electric loader sidesteps that issue entirely, keeping diesel exhaust away from people working in confined spaces or on built-up construction sites.
Which type suits your work
Typical applications for an electric mini loader are confined, noise-sensitive, or emissions-restricted sites: garden centres, hospitality grounds, indoor material handling, and any job where operator comfort and low noise carry real weight alongside the lifting job itself.
A diesel counterpart still makes more sense for remote sites, continuous heavy-duty work across a full day, or any operation without reliable charging facilities nearby.
Operational efficiency on a big forestry or landscaping contract usually still favours diesel’s refuelling speed over an electric model’s charging downtime.
We’re seeing more mixed fleets come through our workshop: one electric loader for the noise or emissions-restricted sites, diesel machines (and mini excavators or a skid steer) for everything else, rather than one power source covering the whole job list.

How the MultiOne range compares on the spec sheet
Our MultiOne EZ7, fully electric, actually out-lifts the equivalent diesel 7 Series on paper. The EZ7 carries a 2,070kg tipping load against 1,725kg on the Kubota-powered diesel model, and it moves faster too, with a 12 km/h top speed against 9 km/h on the diesel.
Both machines share a similar lift height at 2.90-2.98 metres and identical 1,700kg breakout force.
Tyre sizing differs though: the diesel 7 Series runs 23×10.50-12 tractor-profile tyres, while the heavier EZ7 needs a larger 26×12.00-12 tyre to carry the extra battery weight.
The diesel 7 Series runs a Kubota D1305, a three-cylinder engine with a 25hp power output and 85Nm of torque at 1,700rpm, building that torque progressively as the engine revs up.
The EZ7’s electric motor delivers instant torque from a standing start, with no revs to build before full power arrives. On a loading cycle where you’re constantly starting and stopping, that means less waiting between each lift.
How the Sherpa range compares on the spec sheet
Sherpa makes a different trade to MultiOne.
The electric Sherpa 100 Eco runs a 760mm-wide chassis, a full 380mm narrower than the diesel Sherpa 100. That width decides access into doorways, lift shafts, and stable aisles the diesel machine can’t fit through.
Power goes the other way. The diesel Sherpa 100 runs a Kubota D722, water-cooled, 20hp, with 630kg breakout force and a 7 km/h top speed.
The Eco’s electric motor is a PMAC design (permanent magnet, air cooled) producing 4.2hp with 535kg breakout force and a 4 km/h top speed. Unlike the MultiOne EZ7, the Sherpa Eco doesn’t match its diesel sibling on raw output.
ILH specifies the Eco for indoor demolition, stable work, and other confined-space jobs, where 760mm of width matters more than the diesel’s extra 95kg of breakout force.
Sites needing that extra power still call for the diesel Sherpa 100.

What are the disadvantages of an electric compact loader?
Charging time is the main one. Even with a fast charger, recharging takes longer than filling a diesel tank, and continuous heavy use across a long shift needs proper charging facilities on site. Upfront purchase price also tends to run higher than an equivalent diesel model.
Which is cheaper, diesel or electric?
Diesel usually costs less to buy upfront. Electric usually costs less to run, with lower maintenance costs and cheaper energy than diesel fuel. Total cost of ownership over several years often favours electric for machines used regularly, but a low-hours machine may never recoup that difference.
Are electric compact loaders suitable for indoor environments?
Yes. Zero exhaust emissions and low noise make an electric loader far better suited to warehouses, indoor facilities, and enclosed spaces than a diesel machine, which needs ventilation to run safely indoors.
How does diesel’s torque delivery compare with electric?
A diesel engine builds torque as revs climb, so power ramps up rather than arriving instantly. An electric motor delivers full torque from zero rpm, which gives a more immediate response on stop-start loading work.
