Most machines doing regular stump grinding run one of two tooth types, and the type of teeth fitted decides which sharpening method applies.
Standard steel teeth
Standard teeth are solid steel, ground on a bench grinder or angle grinder with an ordinary metal wheel.
They’re cheaper to replace but wear down faster than carbide.
Carbide-tipped teeth
Carbide-tipped teeth have a tungsten carbide tip brazed onto the steel shank.
That tip holds an edge far longer, but it needs a diamond wheel to sharpen properly. An ordinary metal wheel won’t touch tungsten carbide.
Signs your teeth need sharpening
Chip size is the clearest tell. Sharp teeth throw large, clean chips, while dull ones produce fine dust and small fragments as they tear rather than cut.
A blunt cutter wheel also makes the whole job slower, since the grinder has to work harder to remove the same amount of stump.
Efficiency drops well before teeth look obviously worn.
Vibration through the machine is another tell.
A cutter wheel biting cleanly runs smoother than one dragging dull edges through wood, so don’t wait for visible damage before checking the cutting edge.
Tools and safety gear you’ll need
For standard teeth, a bench grinder or angle grinder fitted with a metal grinding wheel handles the job. For carbide, you need a diamond wheel, sometimes called a green wheel.
Match it to a coarse or fine grit depending on how blunt the tooth is.
A clamp or holder keeps the tooth steady while you work, which matters more on carbide where a slipped angle ruins the edge. Compressed air clears metal dust from the workspace afterwards.
Wear a mask with a proper dust filter and goggles throughout.
Grinding carbide in particular throws fine dust that’s unpleasant to breathe, and metal fragments off a wheel spinning at speed are a genuine eye hazard.
Silicone ear plugs are worth having too, since both bench and angle grinders run loud for long stretches.
How to sharpen standard steel teeth
Clamp the tooth so the cutting edge sits square to the wheel. Working freehand on a spinning grinder is how angles end up uneven and how injuries happen.
Hold the tooth against the metal wheel at the original bevel angle, usually somewhere around 30 to 40 degrees depending on the manufacturer.
Grind in short passes rather than one long push, checking the edge between passes so you don’t remove more steel than necessary.
Work the outer edge first, then blend it into the concave face behind the cutting tip. Stop once the edge catches a fingernail cleanly along its full length.
How to sharpen carbide-tipped teeth
Carbide only responds to a diamond wheel. Anything else glazes over the surface without actually cutting the tungsten carbide.
Set the tooth in a holder at the same angle as the original bevel.
Keep the diamond wheel moving rather than holding it static in one spot. Static contact builds heat fast, and too much heat can crack the brazed joint between the carbide tip and the steel shank.
A green wheel suits light touch-ups on teeth that are only slightly dulled.
Heavier wear needs a coarser diamond grit first, then a finer pass to finish the edge.
Dip the tooth in water periodically if you feel it heating up.
When to replace teeth instead of sharpening
Sharpening only works while there’s enough tooth left to shape.
Once a carbide tip has chipped down close to the shank, sharpening won’t restore real cutting power. The same is true once a standard tooth has worn past its original profile.
Carbide is durable, but it still chips on rocks and buried debris. A chipped tip usually isn’t worth trying to salvage.
Swapping it is faster than grinding a damaged edge back into shape. It also avoids the downtime of a job stalling halfway through because a tooth gave out.

How often should stump grinder teeth be sharpened?
It depends entirely on how much grinding you do and what you’re grinding through. Arborists running a machine daily might touch up teeth every few jobs, while an occasional user might go months between sharpening sessions. Chip size and cutting speed are better guides than a fixed schedule.
Can you sharpen stump grinder teeth with a file?
A file can take the edge off a standard steel tooth in a pinch, but it’s slow and hard to keep the angle consistent. Carbide won’t respond to a file at all. A diamond wheel is the only practical way to sharpen it.
How do you know when to replace teeth instead of sharpening?
If sharpening keeps removing more material each time and the tooth still won’t hold an edge, replacement is the better option. The same goes if a carbide tip has chipped down toward the shank rather than just the cutting face.
Do all the teeth on a stump grinder need the same sharpening angle?
Yes. Mixed angles around the cutter wheel throw the balance off, which shows up as extra vibration and uneven wear on whichever teeth are cutting hardest. Working through the wheel systematically, tooth by tooth at the same angle, keeps the whole set cutting evenly.
