An engine burns fuel to create its own power.
Petrol and diesel engines mix fuel with air inside a cylinder and ignite it. That small explosion converts into the piston movement that eventually spins a wheel or blade.
That’s why an engine needs a carburettor or injection system, a fuel tank and usually an exhaust. Those parts exist to generate energy on board, from raw fuel, rather than draw it from an outside source.
A motor works the other way round.
It converts energy that already exists, usually electricity or hydraulic pressure, into rotating motion rather than generating that energy itself.
An electric motor spins because current flows through a coil inside a magnetic field. That covers battery and mains-powered garden tools, though it’s rare on serious groundcare kit.
A hydraulic motor is the version that matters here, where a pump elsewhere in the system pushes pressurised oil through it. That oil flow is what turns the cutter wheel.
How that difference plays out on a stump grinder
Buying a machine to clear tree stumps really comes down to choosing between two ways of getting power to the cutting wheel.
A standalone machine carries its own petrol or diesel engine, so it works anywhere, independent of any other kit.
An attachment or PTO-driven grinder has no engine of its own.
It runs off a hydraulic motor, fed by oil from whatever carrier machine it’s bolted to. That might be an excavator, a skid-steer loader or a tractor.
The engine-powered option costs more upfront, since you’re buying a complete power source rather than sharing one.
It earns that cost back on jobs where tying up an excavator or tractor for stump grinding would stop other work getting done.
Petrol and diesel stump grinders with their own engine

An engine, fuel tank and drivetrain all add bulk that a hydraulic attachment doesn’t carry. You’re paying for reliable performance and a warranty on the grinder itself, rather than sharing that cost with a machine you already own.
Stump grinder attachments driven by a hydraulic motor
A hydraulic motor stump grinder has no engine of its own.
It bolts onto an excavator, skid-steer loader or tractor as an attachment, tapping into that machine’s hydraulic system. A valve on the carrier machine then sends pressurised oil through the motor to spin the cutting head.
Tow-behind stump cutters work on a similar principle, drawing hydraulic or PTO power from whatever’s pulling them rather than carrying their own drivetrain.
If you already run an excavator or tractor for other jobs, an attachment adds stump grinding capability without the cost of a second engine.
You also avoid the mobility problem of storing another standalone machine.
Grinding speed and torque depend entirely on the carrier’s hydraulics, though. An underpowered excavator will bog the cutting wheel down in anything but soft wood.
Which type actually suits the job
A compact, engine-powered pedestrian grinder suits a single stump in a back garden.
Accessibility through tight spaces and a side gate matters more here than raw grinding speed. The job itself usually finishes in well under an hour.
Professional landscapers and forestry contractors clearing larger stumps and roots across a site need something built to last through repeat daily use.
Durable, self-propelled machines and hydraulic motor attachments make better commercial stump grinders than anything sized for the odd homeowner job.
Whichever type you’re weighing up, check the same things before committing.
Look at the condition of the cutting disc, and whether the teeth are sharp, easy to replace and rated for the wood you’re cutting.

Is there a difference between an engine and a motor?
Yes. An engine burns fuel to generate power. A motor converts power that already exists, usually electricity or hydraulic pressure, into movement. On a stump grinder, that’s the difference between a machine with its own engine and one that runs off hydraulics borrowed from something else.
What is the most reliable stump grinder?
Reliability comes down to maintenance and matching the machine to the job more than the badge on the side panel.
A self-propelled, engine-powered grinder that’s serviced regularly and sized correctly for the stumps you actually cut will hold up well over time. A bigger machine bought for jobs it rarely does usually doesn’t.
How long does grinding stumps take?
A small stump takes 15 to 20 minutes with the right machine. A large stump, say 30 inches across with a wide root spread, can take an hour or more. A hydraulic motor attachment running on an underpowered carrier will take longer still.
Either way, grinding leaves wood chips behind that make decent mulch for borders and beds.
