How stump grinding works
The wheel chips away at the wood from the outside in. It moves side to side until the visible part of the stump is gone.
Grinding time depends on the job. What it will take to grind a stump varies with diameter and root density.
A competent operator can take most garden stumps down smoothly in twenty to forty minutes.
Grinding doesn’t remove the whole root system. It clears the stump and the surface roots around the stump, to a depth of roughly 20 to 30cm below ground level.
That’s enough to replant, lay turf, or reseed the lawn over the top. Deeper roots rot down naturally over the following years and cause no trouble.
What’s left afterwards is a shallow crater of wood chips and soil. Rake the chips into a border as mulch, or bag them for the tip. Backfill the hole with topsoil and the patch is ready for grass or planting within a season.

No. Grinding destroys the growth point at the top of the root system, so the stump can’t regrow. Some species may throw up weak suckers from surviving roots nearby, but the original tree is finished.
Does stump grinding remove the roots?
Not entirely. It removes the stump and the roots close to the surface. Those are what cause tripping hazards and get in the way of mowing or replanting. Deeper roots stay in the ground and break down naturally over time.
