Best Machine for Clearing Overgrown Land

Two or three seasons without cutting is enough to bury a field. The right piece of land clearing equipment depends on what's grown. Sometimes that means heavy machinery, here are the best machines for the job.

  • Robotic flail mowers for scrub, brambles and rough ground

We service and hire this kit across Scotland for tree surgeons, estate managers, farmers and councils clearing everything from roadside verges to solar farm boundaries.

Years spent hiring, fixing and running this equipment on real sites is how we know which machine earns its keep and which one gets left in the shed after the first job.

For very overgrown ground, a robotic flail mower is a great machine choice.

Our Energreen range runs from compact remote-controlled units up to larger tracked machines built for steep or uneven sites.

Every one of them is designed to chew through brambles, tall weeds and woody scrub in a single pass, rather than several trips with a strimmer.

None of them need a tractor to tow them into position either, which matters on sites with narrow gateways or no towing vehicle to hand.

The machine drives itself to the patch that needs clearing and starts cutting via remote.

Guide to Robotic Flail Mower Attachments

Why remote control matters once the ground gets rough

Compacted soil, hidden roots and uneven ground make overgrown land a dangerous place to be walking behind heavy-duty cutting equipment.

It’s why these machines run by remote control from a safe distance instead.

The operator stands clear on a bank or slope that would be unsafe for a ride-on mower, and the machine carries far more cutting power than a pedestrian brush cutter or a skid steer with a flail bolted on.

For a mini excavator or skid steer to do the same job, you’re hiring a second machine and a second operator.

A flail mower on its own clears the ground the first time.

    Flail mower or brush mower

    The two get confused constantly.

A brush mower uses solid blades and suits grass, light scrub and the odd sapling, but struggles once brambles and woody stems thicken up.

A flail mower uses dozens of small hinged blades on a rotating drum. This absorbs impacts from stones and buried debris far better and will cut through thick brush without stalling.

If the ground has been left for more than a season or two, flail beats brush mower nearly every time.

Matching the model to the ground

We reach for the RoboCompact on tight verges, narrow gateways and sensitive ground where a bigger machine simply won’t fit.

It weighs 550kg and runs on a 25hp Kubota diesel, yet still holds a 61-degree slope rating.

The RoboMidi steps up from the RoboCompact when a bank or embankment is steep as well as narrow.

Its 60hp engine brings more muscle for tougher vegetation, while staying light and narrow enough for the same tight access and the same 61-degree slope rating.

Land left to scrub for years rather than one season needs the RoboMax.

At 75hp and up to 2,640kg, it’s the heaviest machine in the Energreen range we carry, built for forestry-grade work other models can’t match.

It still handles slopes up to 55 degrees despite the extra weight, and it’s what we point estate and forestry customers toward when a site hasn’t been touched in years.

What Is a Robotic Flail Mower

Wood chippers for the brush and small trees you bring down

A chainsaw or a flail working through overgrown land leaves felled branches, fallen trees and cut brush piled up, and that lot has to go somewhere.

Our Forst and Arbmax chippers turn trees and shrubs, fallen branches and cleared brush into mulch on site instead of leaving piles of debris for someone to cart away later.

Forst’s towable and tracked chippers handle most arb and landscaping jobs, while the Arbmax drum range steps up to larger capacity for bigger clearance projects, still light enough to tow under 3.5 tonnes.

New Forst chippers carry a 3-year warranty as standard too, worth checking before comparing machines on price alone.

A chipper can make light work of a pile that would otherwise take days to load by hand.

Turned into mulch, what you clear helps remove the waste without a separate skip and gives you something useful to spread back over bare ground to slow regrowth.

    Landscaping Machinery Scotland

Stump grinders for what’s left in the ground

Once the trees and saplings are down, the tree stumps and root systems stay put unless something is designed to grind them out.

A stump dug out by hand costs hours of work and leaves a hole that needs filling afterwards.

Our FSI range covers everything from compact pedestrian grinders for a handful of stumps to tracked, self-propelled machines that work through a field of them in a day.

Every one grinds down to ground level, so the area can be reseeded or resurfaced without a stump waiting to snag machinery months later.

A grinder chews through the stump and the wide, shallow root systems around it in one pass, reaching well beyond the visible stump in a way a chainsaw or digger can’t match.

There’s no need to dig around the root ball first either.

Compact loaders for moving everything you clear

Once the growth is cut down and the stumps ground out, debris, mulch and spoil still need shifting, often across ground too soft or too tight for a full-size digger.

A compact loader handles that volume. A wheelbarrow simply doesn’t.

Matching the loader to the site

We turn to the Sherpa 100 Diesel on tight-access sites, doorways, or narrow paths a bigger loader won’t fit through.

At 712kg and 1,140mm wide, it still delivers 630kg of breakout force, plenty for shifting cleared brush and spoil off confined ground.

Open fields, estate boundaries and bigger clearance jobs call for the MultiOne 7 Series instead.

Its telescopic boom lifts to 2.90 metres and handles a 1,380kg load, high enough to fill a trailer or skip without repositioning the machine constantly.

    Compact Loaders for Tree Surgeons

    One loader, several attachments

A single machine covering forks, buckets and grabs is more practical on most land clearance jobs than swapping between a mini excavator for digging and a separate loader for moving material.

Swap the bucket for a mower deck or a trencher and the same loader keeps working long after the clearance job itself is finished.

It fits through a standard field gate too, where a full-size digger often won’t.

Keeping cleared land from growing back

Left alone after a single clearance, brambles and scrub start pushing back through within a single growing season.

We typically advise that the ground needs at least one follow-up cut to stay manageable.

A flail mower makes this second and third pass far quicker than the first. It’s cutting new soft growth this time, not three-year-old woody stems.

That return visit costs far less in machine time when it’s booked while the growth is still soft, rather than starting from scratch again next year.

Two or three maintenance cuts a year, instead of one big clearance every few years, usually costs less overall and keeps the ground usable in between.

Regular maintenance cuts mean whoever’s doing the work never faces waist-high scrub again. The machine only ever meets grass and low growth, which it clears fast.

Common questions about clearing overgrown land

Do I need a tractor to clear overgrown land?

Not necessarily. A tractor with a flail attachment works well on large, open agricultural ground, but a self-contained robotic flail mower can clear land just as effectively on sites too steep, wet or awkward for tractor access.

How do I dispose of the waste after clearing overgrown land?

A chipper running alongside your clearance turns brush and felled saplings into mulch on site, cutting down what needs skipping or hauled away. For large-scale clearing, a compact loader speeds up moving what’s left to a collection point.

Should I cut everything down first or remove stumps and roots as I go?

Cut and clear the standing growth first with a flail, or use a chainsaw on anything too thick for it, then bring a stump grinder through once the ground is visible. Brambles still standing around a stump slow the grinder down, and the job with it.

What safety gear do I need for clearing overgrown land?

Chainsaw and brush cutter work calls for personal protective equipment worn as standard, not as an afterthought. Cut-resistant trousers, eye and ear protection and sturdy boots cover the basics for anyone running a saw or cutter. Robotic flail mowers reduce the risk of injury from the cutting head itself, since the operator controls the machine remotely and never stands behind it.

What’s the biggest mistake people make clearing overgrown land?

Under-speccing the machine. The best tools for the job aren’t always the cheapest hire on the yard. A pedestrian strimmer or hired brush cutter turns a one-day job into a week of stalling and going over the same ground twice.
