The inter-row areas between panel rows get the most regular cutting attention.
Panel clearance to ground level is typically around 800mm-1,500mm depending on the installation, and the row gaps are often too narrow for a conventional ride-on or tractor-mounted mowing deck.
Any machine working there needs a low profile and the ability to work around mounting posts, cable runs, and support frames.
Perimeter embankments and bunds around most solar installations run at 25-45 degrees, sometimes steeper.
A conventional ride-on attempting those gradients is a rollover risk, and sending brushcutter operators up steep bunds for extended sessions creates health and safety exposure that most site managers would rather not create.
Beyond those two, most sites include buffer zones and habitat strips, and some sections with vegetation that has been unmanaged for years.
These areas need equipment capable of dealing with scrub and woody growth, not just trimming maintained grass.
Why conventional mowing equipment falls short
Standard ride-on mowers and zero-turns often exceed panel clearance.
This rules them out for inter-row work, and on steep perimeter banks they’re a rollover risk with no safe way to manage from the seat.
Tractor-mounted arm mowers can reach perimeter banks from the access track but can’t access inter-row areas. They’re also too wide for detailed work around panel structures.
A split operation usually follows. Manual crews for inter-row sections and tractor-mounted kit for the perimeter.
Neither approach covers the full site at the pace or cost a large contract needs.
Manual brushcutter teams work for small sites.
But across hundreds of hectares with multiple visits per season, the labour time and cost quickly exceeds what most contracts can absorb.
How robotic flails work on solar farm terrain
Tracked platforms run lower to the ground than wheeled machines and stay stable on gradients that would roll a conventional ride-on.
Energreen tracked models are designed for low-clearance operation, but check the panel clearance height for your specific installation before selecting a model. The range runs from the RoboCompact at 25hp through the RoboEVO, RoboFIFTI, RoboMIDI, and RoboMAX to the RoboPLUS at 100hp.
Remote operation via a radio handset lets the operator work from up to 150 metres away. The operator stays on flat ground with full visibility throughout while the machine handles the slope and the inter-row sections.
On inter-row ground, any accumulated material from a previous cut makes the next visit harder. And between panel rows there’s no practical way to clear clippings after the fact.
That’s exactly why flail cutting suits solar installations so well.
The blades mulch vegetation in place rather than leaving clippings behind.
Clearance work and ongoing maintenance
Solar farm vegetation management typically involves two distinct jobs.
Firstly, an initial clearance on rough or overgrown ground, and the ongoing maintenance programme that follows.
Operational sites with sections left unmanaged face the same clearance requirement before a routine programme can begin.
For that work, a forestry mulching head handles bramble, gorse, dense scrub, and saplings up to 40-50mm in diameter. Material is broken down to ground level and no brash piles are left on site.
Once cleared, the site moves to a regular maintenance programme with a standard flail head.
Two to four cuts per season is typical depending on growing conditions and biodiversity obligations.
The quick-change attachment system on Energreen machines takes only a few minutes to swap heads.
The site visit can move from forestry mulching through to a standard flail pass in the same session if the schedule allows.
