How Each Wood Chipper Type Gets Its Power
A PTO powered chipper, sometimes called PTO driven, has no engine of its own. It bolts onto a tractor’s three-point linkage and connects to the power take-off shaft, running entirely on the tractor’s own engine.
A PTO chipper needs no fuel tank and no starter motor of its own, since the tractor already covers both.
A petrol chipper is a standalone unit, completely independent of whatever vehicle tows it to site. It carries its own engine and its own fuel tank, so you hitch it, drive to the job, and start it like a lawnmower or generator.
Neither approach is better, but they do have different applications.
A PTO chipper only makes sense if a tractor is already part of your setup. Without one, you’re buying a tractor just to run the chipper, which defeats the purpose entirely.
Power and Torque: Where the Real Difference Shows
A tractor engine turning at a constant PTO speed delivers steadier torque than most compact standalone engines of similar horsepower.
When the flywheel meets a thick or knotted branch, that steady torque keeps pulling material through rather than losing speed.
A petrol engine on a standalone chipper does everything itself, turning the flywheel and running the feed system while also recovering after every thick branch.
Smaller petrol engines can bog down for a moment on dense hardwood before the flywheel spins back up.
Reading Past the Spec Sheet
The torque difference matters most on thick, knotted material where branch diameter nears what the machine can handle.
For small branches and routine pruning, both types manage the work with little difference either way.
A 30hp tractor delivering steady torque through the PTO shaft can outperform a 30hp standalone engine working harder to hold flywheel speed under the same load, so it’s worth asking how a specific model performs on thick material rather than comparing horsepower figures alone.
Hydraulic Feed vs Gravity Feed
Feed system matters as much as raw power, and it splits roughly along the same lines as engine type.
Many PTO chippers use a hydraulic feed system, powered by the tractor’s own hydraulics, which grips and pulls branches through the infeed automatically.
Petrol chippers vary more.
Entry-level models often rely on gravity feed, where the branch’s own weight and the flywheel’s pull draw it through the hopper. Better petrol models add hydraulic or mechanical feed rollers, closing much of the gap.
Hydraulic feed reduces how much a branch fights back against the operator, and it handles awkward material, ivy-wrapped brash, forked branches, sappy green wood, more consistently than gravity alone.
Chips leave through the discharge chute either way, so that part of the machine doesn’t factor into the decision.
Running Costs and Maintenance Over Time
Purchase price usually favours PTO.
You’re not paying for an engine, so a PTO chipper typically costs less upfront than a standalone unit with similar throat capacity.
A PTO chipper has fewer moving parts to service: no engine oil changes, no spark plugs, no separate fuel system to keep clean. The tractor’s own maintenance schedule absorbs most of that cost already.
A petrol chipper adds an engine’s worth of upkeep on top of the chipper itself: blade sharpening, feed system checks, and the usual small-engine servicing that any petrol tool needs.
None of it is expensive individually, but it adds up over a season.
Downtime and Resale
Downtime is the bigger cost. If a standalone engine won’t start, the whole job stops until it’s fixed.
A PTO chipper only goes down if the tractor does, and a working tractor is usually easier to diagnose and repair than a small engine bolted to a chipper frame.
A PTO chipper with fewer wearing parts tends to hold its resale value well, provided the linkage and shaft coupling have been looked after.
A well-maintained petrol machine holds up too, but buyers on the used market always check engine hours first.
Emissions and Fuel
A PTO chipper adds no separate emissions of its own. It runs entirely on the tractor’s engine, so there’s no second exhaust, no second fuel bill, and no extra machine burning fuel while it idles between branches.
A petrol chipper burns its own fuel independently of anything else on site.
For operators chipping for hours at a stretch, that’s a real running cost and a real emissions figure that a PTO setup simply doesn’t add.
Diesel-engined standalone chippers burn less over a working day than petrol ones, but they still burn fuel a PTO chipper never touches at all.
Fuel storage is a smaller point but a real one.
A petrol chipper means keeping a fuel can topped up and stored safely, while a PTO chipper only ever draws on the tractor’s own tank.
Mobility: The Trade-Off Nobody Skips
A PTO chipper goes wherever the tractor goes, and nowhere else. If your work is on your own land, or on a site where a tractor is already present, that’s not a limitation at all.
A petrol chipper is independent. Hitch it to a van or pickup and it reaches any job site, tractor or not.
For a tree surgeon or landscaper driving between residential sites all day, that independence usually settles the decision on its own, regardless of what the cost and maintenance comparison says.
Who Suits a PTO Chipper
Farmers and estate managers are the tractor owners who get the most from a PTO chipper. Hedgerow trimmings and storm windfall are exactly the kind of brash a PTO chipper handles well.
Turning that brash into mulch is one more job for a tractor already earning its keep on mowing and general estate work.
Using the tractor this way costs far less than buying a second machine outright, which is the whole appeal: no other engine to maintain, no other engine sitting idle between jobs.
Councils running tractors for verge work, smallholders with an orchard or a few acres of woodland who already run a compact tractor for mowing and general upkeep, and anyone adding a log splitter to the same PTO shaft all fit the same pattern. That’s a tractor that’s already there, with spare capacity to take on chipping too.
Choosing the right model then comes down to horsepower, since a small compact tractor may not have the PTO output the bigger units need.
Who Suits a Standalone Chipper
Tree surgeons are where standalone chippers earn their keep, and it’s rarely close.
A crew driving between three or four residential jobs a day needs the chipper to go wherever the van goes, no tractor required and no site dependency.
That mobility matters more than any running cost saving a PTO setup could offer, and it’s exactly why a standalone chipper is often the better suited choice for anyone who doesn’t work from one fixed base.
Landscapers moving between sites face the same logic, and hire companies stock standalone models for the same reason: a hire fleet has to serve customers regardless of what they own.
For anyone chipping green, sappy wood straight off the tree, a diesel standalone model brings enough torque to avoid the bogging a smaller petrol engine sometimes suffers.
Why Is It Called a PTO?
PTO stands for power take-off, the rotating shaft on the back of a tractor that transfers engine power to an attachment.
It’s the same shaft that drives mowers, hedge cutters, and post-hole diggers, and a PTO chipper simply taps into it the same way.
Most agricultural tractors run their PTO at a standard 540 RPM, which is why PTO chippers are built to run at that speed rather than needing a specific tractor model.
