You know exactly what you’re getting because nobody’s had it before you. The hours are at zero, every component is fresh, and you’ve got a manufacturer’s warranty behind it.

Things to check when buying a used machine

Service history

Start with the service history, just as you would with an older car.

A machine with a full service record from a recognised dealer is worth more than one without, and not just financially. It tells you the previous owner looked after it. If there’s no paperwork, ask yourself why.

Inspect high-wear machine parts

Look at the feed rollers and the blades.

These are wear items, so some wear is normal, but if they’re badly scored, cracked, or ground down unevenly, the machine has either been worked very hard or maintained very poorly. Both are red flags.

Look at the hydraulics

Check the hydraulics for leaks. Look around rams, hoses, and fittings.

A small weep might be nothing, but anything more than that is a repair bill waiting to happen.

Test the machine

Run the machine. Listen to the engine, watch how it feeds, and see how the discharge chute throws.

You can learn more in five minutes of running a chipper than from an hour of looking at photos online. Make sure to test it out before committing.
