A wood chipper's infeed rollers pull at forces that far exceed what any person can resist by hand. The machine runs at the same speed on a branch as it does on anything else, and it responds to nothing the operator does once material is caught in the feed rollers.

  • Safe operation on a woodchipper builds on training but ultimately depends on consistent daily habits that hold across every job, regardless of how familiar the machine feels.

    From Scotland’s machinery and groundcare specialists, here is our experienced wood chipper advice.

    PPE requirements

    A hard hat with a full-face visor and chin strap is the primary protection against ejected material from both the infeed and discharge chute.

    Safety glasses or goggles under the visor provide a secondary eye layer if material passes through the visor face.

    Ear defenders rated for sustained industrial noise levels are required on all commercial chippers.

    Gloves must be close-fitting, because loose gloves near a running infeed roller create a snagging hazard. Steel-toe boots and hi-vis workwear are part of the standard setup.

    Garments with loose cords or dangling fabric should not be worn near running equipment.

    Pre-start checks on woodchippers

    Before starting on any shift, check that guards are in place and properly secured, and test the emergency stop.

    Check fluid levels and belt and hose condition, and confirm the discharge area is clear before starting up.

    Check blade condition before the first start of the day and after any contact with a stone, metal staple, or screw embedded in timber. Stop the machine fully and inspect before continuing.

    If damage is found, the machine must not be restarted until the blades have been replaced or professionally assessed by an experienced service team.

    Safe feeding technique

    Where you stand while feeding is the most important daily habit in chipper operation.

    Side-on positioning, to the left or right of the infeed opening, takes most of the body outside the ejection path.

    Most kickback incidents that cause injury involve an operator standing directly in front of the opening when material comes back out. Material gives no warning before it comes.

    Feed butt-end first where the material allows.

    Forked or branched pieces with side shoots are more prone to catching and kicking back than clean straight lengths, so break them down beforehand or guide them with a push stick.

    Keep both hands clear of the infeed opening at all times.

    Modern chippers with hydraulic feed systems are designed to draw material at a controlled rate, and hesitation on a piece usually means it needs shortening, splitting, or clearing of side branches before it will feed cleanly.

    Exclusion zones

    An exclusion zone of at least 5 metres must be enforced around the chipper during operation.

    The zone applies to both bystanders and to crew members not actively involved in feeding or clearing.

    Children and animals must not be on site while the machine is running.

    Position the discharge chute to direct chip output into the collection vehicle or a clear area away from people. Chip discharge from commercial machines travels fast and can reach 30 metres or more in the direction of the chute.

    Clearing a blockage

    When the machine blocks, turn the engine off and wait for the flywheel to stop completely before touching anything near the infeed.

    The flywheel on most commercial chippers continues spinning for 10 seconds or more after the engine cuts, carrying enough energy throughout that window to cause the same injuries it would at full speed.

    Clearing a blockage while the flywheel is still moving has caused fatalities in the UK arb industry.

    Once the machine is fully stationary, use a clearing tool or a substantial branch to dislodge blocked material, keeping hands and body parts clear of the infeed throughout.

    What not to chip

    Treated timber, including pressure-treated fencing, railway sleepers, and painted or chemically preserved wood, must not be chipped and spread on land.

    Under SEPA and EASR regulations in Scotland, spreading contaminated woodchip on garden or agricultural ground constitutes illegal waste disposal and as a pollutant. The material must go to a licensed waste facility.

    Before feeding any piece, check for nails and screws embedded in the wood, particularly in recovered timber and root material. Stones and grit cause blade damage and ejection hazards.

    Wet or frozen material clogs the infeed and discharge chute, so let it thaw or dry before chipping.

    Oversized pieces that require forcing should be cut to a workable size first.

    Wood chips produced during clearance work can be repurposed as mulch, compost material, or path surfacing rather than going to waste.

    PUWER, FISA, and the NPTC qualification

    Commercial woodchipper operators in the UK are expected to hold the City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Safe Use of Manually Fed Wood-chipper or an equivalent accredited qualification. Insurers and site managers require it as a condition of commercial operation on managed sites and council contracts.

    PUWER 1998 requires that any commercially used work equipment is properly maintained and that operators have received adequate training. For woodchippers, PUWER compliance means documented inspections and servicing records.

    FISA guidance note 604 covers the safe system of work for woodchipper operation in a forestry and arboricultural context, and is the primary UK-specific reference for professional operators in the arb industry.

    Blade maintenance and regular servicing

    Blade sharpening has more direct impact on daily safe operation than any other maintenance task. Blunt blades increase engine load and raise the likelihood of kickback.

    On a machine in regular daily use, blades should be checked and sharpened before chip output or engine load starts to show the problem.

    Anvil gap must be set to the manufacturer’s specification and rechecked every time blades are sharpened or replaced. Incorrect anvil gap degrades cutting performance and accelerates mechanical wear across the cutting assembly.

    Belt and hose condition and fluid levels are part of the regular servicing schedule. A clean machine is easier to inspect, and wear or damage that would be hidden under accumulated debris is more likely to be caught early.
