An engine's cooling method decides how a stump grinder copes with a full day's work, what it costs to maintain, and how long it can run flat out before it has to stop. Air-cooled and water-cooled engines handle that job differently, and neither one is better across the board.

  • What air-cooled and water-cooled mean for stump grinders

    Every engine generates heat as it burns fuel, and that heat has to go somewhere or the metal warps and the oil breaks down.

    Both air and water can carry that heat away, just by different routes, and the cooling system built around each shapes everything else about the engine.

    How an air-cooled engine sheds heat

    Air-cooled engines rely on fins cast into the cylinder and a fan that pulls ambient air across them.

    It’s a simple system, with nothing to leak, freeze or top up.

    How a water-cooled engine sheds heat

    Water-cooled engines take a different route.

    Coolant, usually a water and antifreeze mix, circulates through the engine block via water pumps, picks up heat, and once the thermostat opens, carries it to a radiator where fins and airflow bleed it off before the coolant heads back round.

    That loop is more parts (radiator, hoses, water pumps, a header tank) and more places something can go wrong.

    It’s also a system that gives more efficient cooling and steadier temperature control than fins and a fan alone, because water circulation keeps working regardless of what the air outside is doing.

    Where each shows up across ILH’s FSI range

    Our FSI B22 pedestrian grinder runs a 14hp Kohler CH440, an air-cooled petrol engine, and that holds right through the pedestrian range.

    Even the FSI B38, the biggest pedestrian machine we sell at 38hp, lists its cooling as air on the spec sheet.

    The trade-offs to consider

    Upfront cost and simplicity favour air-cooled

    An air-cooled engine has fewer parts to buy, fit and eventually replace, with no radiator, hoses or coolant to source. That keeps the upfront cost of a pedestrian stump grinder down and makes it a cost-effective choice for occasional grinding.

    It’s easier to maintain too, since there’s no coolant system to bleed or pressure-test, and fewer components generally means less maintenance and a longer service life.

    Air-cooled engines struggle under sustained load

    Air-cooled engines run into trouble over a long stretch at full power.

    Airflow across the fins depends on ambient temperature, wind, and how clogged the fins are with sawdust.

    Operating temperature climbs steadily the longer the machine works without a break, and fin cooling gets less efficient the hotter the day.

    Push it hard enough on a hot day and the engine derates or shuts down to protect itself. On a paid job, that means stopping mid-stump.

    Water-cooled keeps temperature steady under continuous work

    A water-cooled diesel holds its operating temperature far more consistently, because the coolant loop provides continuous cooling regardless of what the air around the machine is doing.

    That’s why the higher power end of the FSI range, the machines built for daily commercial grinding rather than the odd garden stump, runs water-cooled.

    An air-cooled engine’s heat management simply isn’t built for sustained high loads.

    The coolant keeps circulating even when the machine idles between cuts, so the engine holds its operating temperature through a full shift of back-to-back stumps.

    Water-cooled engines run at a slightly lower noise level in most cases, since a coolant jacket around the block muffles combustion noise that an air-cooled engine’s exposed fins and fan radiate outward.

    That adds up to quieter operation across a working day.

    Liquid cooling adds its own maintenance

    Liquid cooling isn’t free of its own upkeep.

    Coolant needs checking and topping up, water treatment keeps scale from building up inside the block, and antifreeze has to be at the right strength before winter or you risk a cracked block.

    A neglected system can suffer corrosion inside the radiator and water pumps that eventually causes a leak.

    None of that is difficult work, but it’s work an air-cooled machine simply doesn’t ask of you, and it adds to the operating costs over the machine’s life.

    Which type suits your workload

    Workload decides which cooling type suits you, more than anything else.

    A pedestrian air-cooled grinder handles a single back-garden stump or the odd job on a domestic site without any trouble, and there’s no reason to pay for cooling capacity that job will never test.

    Commercial contractors clearing multiple stumps a day, especially on forestry or landscaping contracts where the machine barely gets a break between cuts, are exactly who water-cooled diesel machines are built for.

    The key differences between a pedestrian FSI B-series and a self-propelled FSI D-series come down to exactly this: how long each engine keeps working before heat becomes the limiting factor.

    Run time in one sitting decides your actual cooling needs, not the size of the job on paper. A big job spread across short bursts puts less strain on cooling than a small job ground out in one continuous run.

    Is a water-cooled stump grinder better than an air-cooled one?

    Not universally. Water-cooled suits sustained, high-power grinding where consistent operating temperature matters. Air-cooled suits lighter, intermittent use where simplicity and lower running costs matter more. The right choice is whichever one matches your actual workload.

    What are the disadvantages of air-cooled engines?

    They’re more exposed to ambient conditions, so performance can dip on a hot day or if the cooling fins get clogged with sawdust and debris. Sustained heavy use pushes them toward derating faster than a liquid cooled equivalent, which matters if you’re grinding stump after stump without a break.

    What are the downsides of liquid cooling?

    More components means more to maintain: coolant levels, antifreeze strength, hoses, and a radiator that needs keeping clear. Neglect any of that and you risk overheating or corrosion inside the system, on top of a higher purchase price than an equivalent air-cooled machine.

    Does an air-cooled stump grinder overheat if you use it all day?

    It can, particularly on a hot day with back-to-back grinding and little airflow. Give the fins a chance to stay clear of sawdust and build in short breaks between stumps, and most pedestrian air-cooled engines cope fine with a full working day of typical domestic or light commercial use.
